Welcome to the Politics Group

To openly discuss the state of politics at all levels - local, state and federal. I intend to dive deeper into the topics and present a perspective that isn't apparent unless you look.

  • Are Democrats and Republicans really different?
  • Where do they get their money?
  • What ulterior motives are at play?politics
  • What lies have we been told?
  • Who can we trust?

Financial Reform: Complete Scam

Finanical Reform

FINANCIAL REFORM

The Continued Comedy of Reform

When it comes to the country's financial system I think it is clear that our lawmakers let us down over the last decade or so. It is easy to point out things that every president and administration has done wrong in the last 30 years but it is impossible to pin this on a single party because both have played a substantial role in the collapse. To see this you don't need to look any further then the two idiot, thieving, lying, cheating, stealing, scumbags that are in control, the retard from Alabama Richard Shelby and the out and out liar from Connecticut Christopher Dodd. Both are criminals, period.

CartoonHealthcare Reform is Law, Wars keep Raging

and Student Loan Reforms in Progress

Another busy week for healthcare reform, as I said last week this will continue until the mid-terms elections in November unless it becomes clear who the winner is on healthcare reform. The wars continue, delivering more American casualties back to American soil every week, this so needs to stop. But Haliburton did get billions to rebuild Iraq's infrastructure, and after all isn't that the point? One potentially positive note is the reform being discussed for student loans, a positive move here would be encouraging but the debate still rages.

The healthcare reform bill requires its own dedicated article given the importance and complexity of it, this is something I may do but it will be in the context of opportunities and not necessarily a point by point analysis, I'll let others do that. One area that I've already developed content around is the movement to electronic health records as pushed by the Government through the Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement process. This, like anything in healthcare is complicated and has lots of tentacles, but without a consolidated and accessible electronic medical record the benefits of our (or any) system are limited - some would argue extremely limited. This seems to be one of the things the administration is clear on and is pushing hard for, I endorse this thinking caveatted by addressing the security and privacy concerns.

Financial Healthcare ReformHealthcare and Financial Reform

Politics as Usual

Another week flew by but a couple important things happened in Washington. The entire week was pretty much wrapped around healthcare reform which was passed late yesterday by the house, the bill will now go to the President for signing.

The cartoon on the right addresses both major issues currently on the table: the healthcare and financial reform bills. Actually, there was a little more that happened this week including a supreme court ruling upheld, continuing saga in the middle east and I have to mention again, that Texas is officially changing the history books! Crazy, huh? Good cartoons though.

Supreme Court Upheld Ruling

Money = Free Speech

The supreme court upheld a ruling last week that eliminates the ability of the political and legal systems to control or impose any limits on corporate political spending. This of course, was bound to happen and all the politicians knew it. This is why Obama has been so strongly opposed, he was using it for political gain knowing his rhetoric would make no difference. It is pretty similar to term limits, every politician is for them when asked and yet they've never made it to law.

Slow Week

This week looks like it was pretty boring other then what seems to be the common spectacle of lawmakers being caught doing siomething illegal or unethical, or both. The Massa debacle continues with SNL jumping on the bandwagon. I guess the best part of the week was Glenn Beck admitting that he wasted an hour of America's time. I did manage to pluck out some noteworthy items from the week, they are listed below:

Politics

Another week has went by and the gubmint hasn't made any progress on the objectives laid out by our Commander and Chief. Let's be honest, their not even trying. The only progress being made is in the areas that help corporations get more tax dollars, Bush can't hold a candle to Obama when it comes to value to the corporate state. There are some other interesting tidbits of news this week that warrant at least some ridicule and disgust from the citizens, I'll try and document those items below. One thing is becoming clear, Americans are pretty much fed up with Washington and politics as usual - incumbents beware!

Last Week in Politics

politicsWe have a very active political landscape right now, that's for sure. This week was no exception as the gubmint continues on the march towards bipartisan insanity. I had to consciously limit the amount of material for this post otherwise it could have easily been multiple pages. Things continue to heat up and as they do it becomes even clearer that the democrats and republicans are the same party. The only differences between the parties seem to be choreographed and lack any (real) substance.

So, here are the bullets that warrant some digital space this week:

Startup Visa Act

kerry lugarStartup Visa.com

Is this good for Americans?

Senators Kerry (D-MA) and Lugar (R-IN) introduced what's known as the Startup Visa Act in Washington today. The full text of the legislation is attached if you care to read it, the document is only seven pages in double spaced text so not much to read.

The Legislation

startupvisaBasically, the legislation requires modification of the existing EB-5 Visa in order "to drive job creation in the US and increase global competitiveness." The intention is to allow immigrant entrepreneurs to easily acquire visas in order to start these new companies that will create jobs. For each start-up company there may be up to three founders that would get the two (2) year visas along with their spouse and children.

Financial Reform: Are they kidding?

tweedle deePRISON FOR THESE
TWO WOULD BE REFORMERS

The two idiots are at it again, the same folks that claimed to not have any idea of what was happening in the world of financial services until it crumbled around them. You know the two, the same two that are and were totally and completely responsible to know what was going on and to correct it. These two guys are the modern day tweedle-dee and tweedle-dumb.

poseEnough suspense, the two are none other than the democrat from Connecticut, Senator Christopher Dodd and the republican senator from Alabama Richard Shelby. An article was posted today on Yahoo (and others) indicating that the financial reform bill now seems likely and implying that is because Senator Shelby has decided to grace the committee with his enlightened presence once again. Apparently he decided to play politics for a while but now, he's back with a vengeance!

LAST WEEK IN POLITICS

politicsAnother busy week in the world of politics, things are heating up everywhere. The republicans and democrats are separated by a widening chasm, of course I think it is fabricated, at least on the serious money and power issues. Sure they throw grenades at each other but they rarely explode, they are just tossed back and forth like a hot potato. This week was no different, the hot potato issue was and will likely remain the stimulus package. Anyway, here are some of the relevant bullets of the week that caught my attention:

Funny Political Books

political humorPOLITICS CAN BE FUNNY

Oh yea, political humor represents one of the best wells for comedians to dive into when they need something funny. The always changing landscape of politics creates the perfect perpetual source for comedic inspiration. Politics and politicians specifically always seem to be obliging the comedians by continuously acting (and being) stupid. It goes beyond just stupidity though, many politicians are corrupt and in some cases outright criminal but comedians can make that work just as well as stupidity and ignorance.

The reason for this post is to highlight my favorite political books that made me laugh, the books listed here are arguably the funniest written in the last decade. If you haven't read these I highly recommend them for a laugh-out-loud book reading (or listening) experience.

The Franken books I have listened to at least 5 times, whenever I have a long project or a long drive along I break out the Franken. The others are almost as funny but Franken's book, Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them is a classic and I would argue is the best of this breed of humor. If you only read one of these books then this is the one. Other then Dan Kurtzman's book which I just don't know about, all the others are available in audio format with the actual author doing the reading. In the cases where the author does the reading I think the audio books are better than the paper or digital versions.

Click on any of the images below to go to Amazon and make a purchase, you'll really enjoy these books - I promise. Enjoy and let us know what you thought...

Politics and Mashups

politicsPOLITICS and MASHUPS

MAKE GOOD FRIENDS

There are severeal sites that I lookup at for politics pretty much daily, several are traditional web sites with a little web 2.0 sprinkled in (comments, feeds, etc) but quite a few are mashups. A mashup in the simplest terms provides a consolidated picture that is derived from multiple sources. For example, iGoogle is a dynamic mashup where feeds, functions and services can be put on a single, consildated and customized view.

I thought it would be a good idea to share the love and point readers to these mashups, obviously you can decide for yourself if they are worth bookmarking and using again. Most of these mashups are combining multiple feeds and APIs to collect the data and make the presentation, this is a trend that is growing in popularity primarily driven by the ubiquitous use of the mobile platform browsing the internet.

congressThe marriage between political content and mashups is a logical one, especially considering that the information gathered is spread over a number of locations and is in a number of different formats. The other driving factor, I think, is that much of the political data lends itself to mapping and mapping is the most popular web service on the internet - consider the phrase "there's a map for that". Obviously this is all made possible by the ability to get the data which means it has to be published and accessable, there are a number of entities to thank for this but I'll do that in another post.

Joe Biden: An Update

bidenJOE BIDEN

ACTIVITIES

Looks like Joe has been a busy beaver lately, he is showing up everywhere in interviews, in print and on TV. So what is going on with Joe "Blue Collar" Biden? Let's see.

Historically Joe has said the wrong things at the wrong time, this continues with his latest round of commentary captured in print and on video in the links below. Most of this is just political bullshit but there is some substance in the recently released annual report on the Progress of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act by Biden's office. It looks like, as is generally the case, the media is focused on the bullshit and not the substance - typical.

In the last week, Joe has:

Global Warming and the Snowstorm

GLOBAL WARMING?

After these storms you must be kidding...

co2It is really a shame that the discussions around global warming has resolved into a ridiculous shouting match. I knew it wouldn't be long before everybody was claiming the recent record snow event proves their point, whatever it is. The global warmers say this storm is just another indication of increased levels of energy in the atmosphere, while the deniers say that this storm is a clear indication the Earth is not warming.

It really is undeniable that the climate is warming up, this can be measured unambiguously through any number of methods but the most indisputable is the retreating glaciers at both poles. It is a shame that we are still debating this even after so much data has been collected. I know, the argument is the data is invalid and fabricated - unfortunately that may be true because there is a second and more nefarious agenda in play, it revolves around a carbon tax.

Let me stay on topic though, there are at least three parts to the global warming issue that create difficulties for me in understanding what is really going on, they are:

Wall Street: Pissed Off

bailoutWALL STREET:

PISSED AT GOVERNMENT

I actually wrote this piece last night and then lost it when we had a power outage from the massive snow storm in the mid-atlantic region. I was just adding the graphics when all power was lost.

Earlier this week Robert Sheer from truthdig.com posted an article entitled: Wall Street Wants a Refund. As is usually the case with the truthdig writers the article was well written and generally pessimistic visa-vie the Government. Sheer makes several interesting points that are clearly correct but the conclusion he comes to is, I think, wrong.

The premise of the article is the Wall Street gang is upset because of the statements made by Obama in the recent state of the union address. These statements coupled with his apparent endorsement for bringing back pieces of the Glass-Steagall Act has many of the bankers and investments firms freaking out. In particular, the component of Glass-Steagall that Volcker wants to bring back is the separation of banking and investment firms.

Nanotechnology Education Act

wuBILL H.R. 4502

NANOTECHNOLOGY EDUCATION ACT

January 26, 2010

Finally, something positive to publish about the Federal Government. Oregon's House representative David Wu introduced a bill back in January that will strengthen institutions and their capacity to provide instruction in nanoscience (nanotechnology).

The bill, HR 4502, provides for appropriations in the sum of $40,000,000 for fiscal 2011 and assumes the same or more for the years 2012 through 2014. The bill contains just 5 sections (a..e) that describe the findings of Congress, purpose of the bill, definition of major parts, and authorization and appropriations language. A summary of each section is below:

a. Findings

The findings are not surprising indicating that nanotechnology will have a huge impact on the future of society which will extend into economic bliss. It highlights the disparity between United States students versus foreign students in the fields of science and engineering, specifying engineering doctorates as an example. It goes on to talk about the fact that we need to invest in the education as well as the tools required to deliver leading edge instruction.

US faces `serious and significant' cyberthreats (AP)

cyberterror

NEXT BIG SCARE: CYBER THREATS

Here they come, the new CyberLaws. We knew this was coming, as Matt pointed out in a post here the government is positioning itself to conduct cyber warfare. Whatever laws are enacted they are clearly going to defined as cyberterrorism which means the invocation of the Patriot Act whenever needed, how convenient.

The internet is the last place where truly free speech exists or can exist, it won't be long before that's taken away as well. Protecting us by taking away all of our freedoms and rights is how Obama continues what was started by Bush. The worst part is, Obama is doing much of this via executive order! These efforts are being run by John Brennan, an advisor to the President (see below) and from what I can tell he is dangerously connected.

John Brennan is assistant to the President and Deputy National Security Advisor for the Department of Homeland security, obviously with this much responsibility he must be a very talented guy. John's job is primarily to screw Americans under the threat of terrorism, he is doing well. He is a career CIA employee where he climbed the ranks to deputy director under George W Bush, now he is Obama's chief intelligence advisor and directing the efforts to eliminate our rights, all of them.

Tea Party Convention: Palins Speech

PLATFORM

Last night the Tea Party convention that took place in Nashville Tennessee finished up its three day event with a Sarah Palin speech. Nashville is great place if you want to attract the religious right, which is clearly what they wanted to do.

So this is it, the alternative to the republicans and democrats, yea I'm buying it. The Tea Party and Drill baby drill as a platform. I actually tried to watch the speech but I couldn't finish it because like most political speeches it was insulting and too hard to get through. This was one of those times where the commercials were actually better than the content, similar to the always anticlimactic Super Bowl (new eTrade baby commercials tonight!).

Patriot Act and Martial Law

USA PATRIOT ACT

seal

ORIGINAL STATUTE

The statute was enacted when George Bush signed it into law on October 26th, 2001. The original act was passed by huge margins in Congress, no surprise given that it was only a month after the 9/11 horror. Here is a link to the original voting role call from 10-25-2001.

REAUTHORIZATIONS

From the beginning there have been vocal opponents (including myself) and several cases that have been upheld by the supreme court ruling the actions to be unconstitutional. The law was expanded in 2005 and included 19 amendments (see them here) and signed into law in July of 2005. The congressional voting record is here. A second reauthorization took place in February 2006 which further amended the act and expanded its scope to include things like methamphetamine laws! Here is a link to the voting record for this third expansion.
